Located in the in the Irish Sea, the Isle of Man is 52 kilometres long and 22 kilometres wide. The Isle of Man is an established and respected international finance centre, built on political and fiscal stability, low taxation and a fully supported modern infrastructure. Financial and related services, manufacturing and tourism are key sectors of the island's economy.

The Isle of Man (Manx) Government offers incentives to high-technology companies and financial institutions to locate onto the island, which also contributes to employment and has positioned the island as a leading e-commerce platform. Finance contributes about 35% to the Manx gross national product. The Isle of Man also enjoys free access to European Union markets. The Island's population is 81,952 (2006 census): approximately half being Manx born and the rest, mainly British, although an increasingly varied mix of nationalities are relocating to the island to work in both the financial and hospitality industries.

The Isle of Man, situated in the centre of the British Isles, is an internally self-governing dependent territory of the Crown that is not part of the United Kingdom. The Island has a special relationship with the European Union set out in Protocol 3 to the United Kingdom's Treaty of Accession. Tynwald, the Island's 1000 year old Parliament, makes its own laws and oversees all internal administration, fiscal and social policies. Both individuals and companies resident in the Isle of Man for income tax purposes enjoy complete independence from the United Kingdom on matters of direct taxation. The Island's taxation system is quite separate from that of the UK. There are no inheritance, capital gains or wealth taxes. Personal income tax has a 10% standard rate and 18% higher rate. There is a tax cap on total income payable of £100,000 per person. The tax cap has encouraged a steady flow of wealthy individuals and families to settle in the Island and property prices at the higher end of the market are very buoyant.

Economy overview

Offshore banking, manufacturing, and tourism are key sectors of the economy. The government offers incentives to high-technology companies and financial institutions to locate on the island; this has paid off in expanding employment opportunities in high-income industries. As a result, agriculture and fishing, once the mainstays of the economy, have declined in their shares of GDP. The Isle of Man also attracts online gambling sites and the film industry. Trade is mostly with the UK. The Isle of Man enjoys free access to EU markets.
